Following a series of public input sessions and public hearings, the Board of County Commissioners approved the new Solid Waste Ordinance 2014-005, which will take effect on January 1st. The County will no longer mail bills or issue annual permits. Instead, users may purchase a Punch Card to be redeemed as payment at all county transfer stations. Any person may purchase and utilize a Punch Card to use when disposing of solid waste at any of the County Transfer Stations (punch cards are not accepted at the City of Socorro landfill). A punch card will contain "punches" worth $2.25 ($2.14 cost of disposal plus 5% governmental GRT). Each "punch" will allow the cardholder to dispose of solid waste per the following Solid Waste Disposal Fee schedule for residential waste:
- Each time a Person goes to a Transfer Station to dispose of solid waste, an attendant will punch the Punch Card immediately prior to disposal of the solid waste in accordance with the Fee Schedule. - When a Punch Card has been completely punched, the Person will then be required to purchase another Punch Card prior to disposal of any further solid waste at a Transfer Station. - The County is not responsible for and will not replace lost or destroyed punch cards.
