Literacy Program

Literacy Volunteers of Socorro County (LVSC) was established in 1989 to foster and promote increased literacy among Socorro County’s 17,000+ residents. Accredited through ProLiteracy, LVSC provides literacy opportunities for adults and their families to acquire skills that will help them become more effective members of their families, communities, and workplaces.

LVSC is a financially self-supporting, non-profit organization, that relies on support from local resources to help continue and expand literacy efforts in the community. We are a volunteer-based, professional organization committed to providing one-to-one or small group tutoring to functionally illiterate adults and to adults lacking English language skills and other literacy skills such as vocational computer competency.

LVSC provides training and certification for its volunteer tutors. LVSC provides a variety of classes including Basic Reading, English as a Second Language, Vocational Computer Skills, Pre-GED instruction, Citizenship instruction, as well as instruction in Life Skills, Prevocational Instruction and Workplace Literacy classes.

LVSC services are provided free of charge.

We are always looking for more tutors, if you'd like to volunteer, please contact us.

**High School Equivalency Tutoring**

Mon. - Wed. - Fri.
11 am - 1:00 pm
1410 Ake St.

Whether you want to pursue a career or attend college, earning a high school equivalency credential is more important thanever. Now there is an affordable alternative to the GED® test that offers you more choices — the HiSET® exam from ETS.

The HiSET exam provides important advantages that give you the best chance to succeed on test day.

More flexible. The HiSET exam can be taken in multiple formats and multiple languages, and it provides a number of accommodations for test takers with disabilities and health-related needs. See Requirements by State or Jurisdiction for available formats at your local test center.

More accessible. You'll have more test center options, so you can choose the one that's most convenient for you.

More affordable. The HiSET exam is the least expensive high school equivalency test on the market.

Once you pass the HiSET exam, you'll have the valuable state-issued credential you need to advance your career or continue your education.
